Overdrive/MAF Problems

Hi, I am having problems with a 2l 16v auto refusing to engage overdrive. Having hunted through the site I first of all cleaned the MAF. The elements were dirty but are now spotless. Some improvement in idling but no difference to the overdrive problem. I then tried running the car with the maf multiplug disconnected. Overdrive would then engage as it should. So I thought the problem must be the MAF. Bought one online from a breakers (with 30 day guarantee). Fitted it and the fault is still there and it still disappears with the multiplug disconnected. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next before I push the heap into the nearest d**e. (thats a big ditch here in the fens - nothing to do with - oh well never mind). Thanks in anticipation.

An OBD may bring something to light. 4th gear in these things is electricly controled as oposed to mechanical like 1-3. Is the overdrive light flashing on when you hit the usual change point?

try cleaning the contacts on the multilug for the maf, or even replacing the multiplug its self. Russ

Hi, No the overdrive light doesn't flash at all. It does come on as it should when the O/D button is pressed. I will try cleaning the multiplug tomorrow and even replacing it if I have to. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Did you clean the MAF you got from the breakers as they are often dirty.

Hi, no, I didn't clean it as it looks very clean. I will try cleaning it anyway though and see if it makes any difference. Thanks for the suggestion.

Possibly another sensor is faulty like the IAT (Inlet Air Temperature) located in the bottom of one of the black air inlet tubes.

Have now cleaned the replacement MAF, checked multiplug and wiring, checked MAF is receiving appropriate current. No joy. If it was any other sensor would not the problem still be there with the maf disconnected?
