Trouble Wiv Me Nuts!
« on: Feb 7th, 2006, 7:43pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Been having some difficulty with various nuts & bolts on this car (the undoing of I mean).

Now I've really reached a problem one... the sump plug.

I've never touched this one myself, but the muppet that did it at the last service has really done it up tight. I can't shift it at all.
And... now its rounding over too!  how the hell am I going to remove it?   Huh

mouldgrips? or try cutting a slot in the head with a hacksaw, and remove with ratchet and flatbladded screwdriver piece, failing that gentle persuasion with a hammer and cold chisel.

Try a Metrinch socket, these grip on the flats, not the corners.

It is an alloy sump but I have to admit, I can't see a plastic washer in there.

I have all new stuff ready to go back but just need this one out. Dunno why its so tight!

It may have been glued on with loctite. I have come across this on several motorbikes. If the previous idiot owner has either crossed the threads (easily done with alloy) or stripped them (again...easy) the only other way to seal the plug is to glue it.

Don't know about molegrips, they sure do make a mess    ( I've ruined a few caliper bleed screws with 'em  ),  firstly  get a replacement sump plug  ,    get a big sharp  cold chisel and a big hammer, find the address of the previous  owner,  pay him a visit   and  do some remedial dental work with  the said chisel and hammer, No, No, only kidding,    this board does not  condone   vengeance attacks,    ( just draw him a cartoon,     Ooooh!  satire Cheesy)

Whack it  hard   in  the  anti-clockwise  direction,    that should  loosen it .

Well, I have new plug at the ready, but I still can't shift it  Embarassed

I've tried grips, sockets, a hammer and chisel and it still aint moving!
Its not easy while laying on the garage floor, but what I have managed to notice today, is that whoever did it last time has used a metal washer  Angry

I've now given up I'm afraid. This is going to have to go to a garage for someone else to burst a bloodvessel over.

Mr Floppy... visiting the previous owner is starting to sound good. Mind you, it was probably the garage I used for the last service  Undecided

NoNo
Always undo the Sump Bolt when the engine is stone cold overnight, works for me every time.
Heat makes metal expands as can be difficult to undo.

Agree
Spray loads of WD40 or anything like '3 in 1' Oil for few hours then dry off around the bolt shape and its should be able to undo, if not then that shows it possible had been strewed back on by power/air tool which shouldn't have been done!
Other trick is put an old cloth over the bolt and a next sized spanner to help to get grip to undo.
Worth an try though!  Wink

Well, I have a bit of an update.

The troublesome sump nut has finally come off! More heating, hitting and chiselling eventually did the trick.

This is how the old one looks now its off...
 Shocked

Many thanks today to Russ (nuttyscorp) and Paul (paulscorp).  This wouldn't have got done today if they hadn't come round and got stuck in. Cheers again guys... I owe you one.  Smiley
