Locking wheel nuts

What a shock I had today - went into local Ford dealer (Days of South Wales) for a fanbelt for the Scorp and was quoted a price of £55!!!!  Shocked  Angry I aint ever paid that for a cambelt, so I went to local MF and bought it there. Then after pottering around for a hour or so I decided to take off the front wheels to have a good inspection of the calipers/flexihoses/pads/shocks and springs etc etc when I realised that I need a key to get the locking nuts off. After searching all in the car I realised that the previous owner had not supplied it with the car. 20 min drive (in the Xantia Cheesy) to his house and then he tells me that he has no idea about the key (panic time  Shocked Cry  Huh). So back to the Ford dealer to see if I can match a key to the set that I have - a waste of time 12 monkeys would do a better job in there. Then off to Halfords, Motorworld and Bumper to Bumper all with no luck. Now due to the design of the nuts you cant get one of those gator grip sockets onto the nut as it has a shroud protecting it from this sort of thing (placing a socket on it). I dont fancy wrecking the alloys with my angle grinder. And my left threded stud removers dont work so it looks like my only option is to drill out the wheel studs.

And one of those bloody cycle couriers went into the front wing of the Xantia   Angry - Craig.

Had same problem with locking nuts on my old Granada.Got hold of a good steel chisel about 1/2 inch wide and managed to tap locking nuts loose.if that does not work perhaps you could cut a notch in the nut with one of thos mini drevel drills to give a better shaped face for chisel to hit into.

Have you tried one of the local tyre firms?. Tool companys like Sealy sell kits for removing such nuts. Even Screwfix sell a small kit but obviously it depends on the type of locking nut.

The locking nuts do have an ID on them so FMD should be able to supply one of the correct combination.

If all else fails, find a good man to weld a 12mm bolt to the l/nut, may need a couple of tries, but the allways submit in the end, most accessory shop will sell you ford lock nuts.

As my dad is a member of the AA I thought about getting him to call them out - on the off chance that they have a tool to get them off. But as the car has no current tax or test I think that they may throw a strop at that........

Think we are talking about the serpentine fan belt here, pretty neat trick for anybody to get the right one first time at a factors...........

You guessed it they always seem to provide a mk3 belt, "thats what it said in the book"

NON of the scorpio variants have a timing BELT they ALL USE a chain perhaps you are mistaking the accessory belt as the timing belt...

See here for the 2.0l http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain20.htm
All of them can be seen in this article as well http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29cos.htm

(near the bottom of the page )

Hope this clarifies the situation.

Apart from the TD which has cogs, just like HGV/PSV and plant  Wink no belts or chains to snap. What I meant is that I have never paid £55 for a cambelt, never mind the daylight robbery of £55 for a bleeding fanbelt/accesory belt or serpentine belt (whatever your choice of vocabulary is) no matter how long it is. - Craig.
