Double Change Down

I was driving at c.70 (really) in cruise control when a car came charging up towards me. I put my foot down to quite hard to get out of his way and the engine flew up into the red 6-7k revs for a few seconds and then recovered. Never had this problem before or after. Vehicle is a FSH 2.3 160k R Reg (facelift) with no other problems apart from a slight cunk on the gear change 1-2 when cold. I presume it double changed down I just wonder if anyone had any comments on this. I looked at a replacement last year but decided I couldn't find anything better so I'd like to keep it running for a few more years.
