Auto box dipstick

Hi all - any help with this slightly unusual one...

...I've recently got my car back from having a gearbox changed and the garage that did it told me  - after the first 500 miles to check the transmission oil for colour and amount.

I've just done that and the colour and level are fine...

...but I can't get the dipstick back in. It goes down to a point where about six inches still prortude and won't go any further.  Attempting to push it further, regardless of twising or jiggling, just causes the stick to bend as if something were blocking the measuring end.  I don't see how this can be - the stick was in fully before.

So my question is - and assuming that hole needs to plugged (true?) - shoudl I break the stick of the handle and just put the handle back in or is there some method of getting it in that I haven't tried or other? Help...

Cheers

the tube the autobox dipstick goes into might be coming away from the box and/or not fitted correctly after the gearbox work, its only a push fit onto the box
try moving the tube about a little just now rather than the dipstick and have a look underneath

Dont break the dipstick Smiley

Thank you!

 Cheesy

Moved tube about a bit and stick went in fine.

Cannot look underneath now (too dark) so will do so in the morning.

Where do I have to position my head look to see the same as is in that picture?

And also - if it has come away - can they be rejoined just but putting them back together with my hands or are tools required? (And if so what?)

Cheers

its just a push fit, play about with it from the top till it feels solid.

I cheated, that pic was of a gearbox in my garage Wink

the dipstick tube should also be bolted to the bell housing this has obviously been neglected, its a right pig to do in situ ,as you can only get a dumpy spanner on it

Strange coincidence.
I've just bought a sick scorpio - no 1st gear for spares & I did same thing.
Pulled out dipstick to check auto tranny fluid - came out easy enough.
Stopped going back in 5-6" too soon - felt like it was hitting something.
Got £50 extra off car for this - suspected tube displaced. But not loose at all & securely bolted bracket.
10 mins of twiddling around / forcing to side etc. and then it just dropped back in.
Not bothered checking why -as I'm about to drop sump off to try & fix 1st gear prob.
Wonder how common this is
