fuel gauge not working

Hello all, I just purchased a 1995 2.0 16V Scorpio Estate Ghia.Although it has high mileage, I am very happy with it and hope it is good value for money. Nevertheless, I found a problem. The fuel gauge pointer remains at 0 and trip computer cannot display distance to empty. This morning it has worked for 5 minutes and stopped again. I suspect it is connector or a sensor problem. Can anyone help fixing it ? I'd like to know where and how to check. Bye.

Hello and welcome I think you'll need to check the wiring and possibly drop the tank. The sender unit wire comes up under the rear bumper just off centre on the drivers side and goes through the boot to join the wiring loom near where the petrol filler cap and rear lights are, there is a connector in this area you could check

Read this and see if it helps.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm. The next thing is to make sure that you have the battery cover fitted and the fuse box lids properly fitted. Check the drain holes in the front of the battery tray to make sure they are clear. Water in any of these units will cause many and varied problems. Welcome to the site and hope you enjoy your car. There is a wealth of info on the site and the first place to look is on the front page under 'Fault Finding'.

Thanks for your answers...As the rear bumper has been damage the problem may come from there. Regarding the battery, it is cover so I guess it is ok. Is a ohm meter enough to check the senor/sender ? Should I connect a OBD ?
