2.5 TD Headgaskets

I've been told that there are three different thinknesses for the headgaskets on the VM engines and that you can indentify which thickness you need by looking for notches in the gasket. What I would like to know is whether these notches are visible without the heads being taken off or do I have to strip everything down and remove the gaskets to find out. I've also been told I can use the engine number as well to identify the gaskets. Is this true? IF it helps, the car is an N reg Scorpio registered late 1995. Many thanks.

Not too sure about the engine number, but the gaskets on mine were seated flush between the side of the block and the head (i.e. with nothing sticking out) so could only be seen with the head off. Matt
