Newby needs emissions help

Hi All,
My 1995 24 valve just failed its test on high emissions.
The tester suggested a new set of cats but he did not do a diagnostic.
Looking through the pages of this great site I am lead to believe the egr system may be faulty as I have a slight missfire on part throttle and I have noticed it pinking under heavy acceleration occasionaly.
Am I barking up the right tree or am I in the wrong forrest altogether
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi, and welcome to the site  Smiley

The EGR can indeed cause these sorts of problems.

Just a couple of extra thoughts.
Did you take the car for a good run before the test?
Have you noticed any exhaust rattle or loss of power to suggest the cats have borken up and are blocking the exhaust?

Think you are right to investigate the egr first though. Just in case you haven't already seen these:

Could well just be a loose vacuum pipe as in the 2nd picture on the first link above, this happened to mine a while ago!

Hope this helps  Smiley

EDIT: Also clean the MAF if you haven't already, its amazing what that can do!

Hi Dave,
Fistly no, the car whent round the corner for the test, but the guy said he left it running to get up to operating temp before the test.
I have been on my back under the car giving the cats a thump and can here no rattles. The power also seems good other than the missfire.
Any thoughts on buying a secondhand egr system there is a one on the obvious auction site for about 25 quid

Well personally I would take the car for a good run first. The thing with cars like the Scorp, particularly the 24v, is that they don't need to work hard to push the car along, so the cats don't get warmed up as quick (read this on Honest John website).

Think you should try a 10 mile run at least, at a reasonable speed, then put it through the emissions again.

Thats what I would do anyway!

Cheers

Evening all,
After having a good look at the above pages I stuck my hand down the back of the engine and guess what I found
Thats right an EGR pipe doing its best not to be any part of the system at all looser than a very loose thing!!!
so it looks as though I can say a fond fairwell to the skin on my nuckles and spend the day pulling it all apart and hopefully putting it back as it should be.
Guess the site has saved me a fair few beer tokens so there is a donation on ots way.
A great big thanks to all you knowledgeable ones out there.
Cheers,
Al
