Seat Cushion Cover Removal - Help Needed.

Reading through the page that descirbes how to remove the seat base foam/cover it mentions you need to removed the "hog rings".
My question is this - how do you remove the rings and what do you replace them with afterwards ?
Anyone done this before ?
