AC Compressor

Hi All,
My AC compressor stink on the way home tonight, made a luvuly smell  with super white smoke effects into the bargin!

Having remembered a thread on here I disconnected the multiplug from the compressor and limped home.

I don't want to spend the money replacing the compressor unit at the moment, the unit is rattling (rather annoyingly) at the moment - will it be OK to carry on driving the car? or does the rattle from the compressor mean worse news?

I confess I haven't had the AC checked since I bought the car ( Embarassedfeeling guilty now!).

Yes Highlander, you're quite right - the pulley does sieze when I switch the AC on, although the rattle has got a lot worse.  I visited the local garage this afternoon, oh my - they want £800.00 to replace the compressor & belt & re gas the system.

Having spent quite a bit on the car already, I'm wondering now if I there's anything I can do to leave the compressor in situ but stop the rattle, or just take it off completely?

I must admit I don't like the idea of not having an item of original spec equipment, and I know running a Scorpio is not something to be done on a shoestring but £800.00 is too steep to justify at the moment!

£800 is way too expensive

shop around and you'll find a cheap aircon guy who will regas cheaply (ive seen a few do it for £40) they will also change the compressor at the same time if you get another one.

I think you should be looking at a total cost of around £100 to sort this with a second hand compressor and regas

Without trying to cause too much panic, if the pulley breaks or causes the belt to jump off you will instantly lose both the power steering and the water pump systems  Undecided

A possible cheaper fix would be to fit a shorter belt that missed out the compressor altogether

Thanks for the link - I only remembered seeing a diagram with an idler pulley for a car without ac!

Do you think the one for a 2.3 16v manual without ac will fit my auto?

Just to close this one off; the belt from a 2.3 16v without ac did fit!
Have left the compressor in situ but the as the new belt bypasses this, no more annoying rattle or threat of failure.  Will get compressor sorted out later.
Thanks for the advice chaps Smiley
