hi guys
had my old lady 2 years now without any big problems, but i think that is about to change... yesterday when i started the car .. put it in drive  and ..... NOTHING. ....had to rev the engine to 4000 to get it to even inch forwards...
put it in N... then drive several times, but same every time.. put it in P whilst i thought about it ,,, put her in 2.. and drove off ,,, no problem.. drove to the bottom of the street, stopped and put it in D.. and this time she went o.k.. she was fine all day without any problems...
this morning, went out ... started her up ... put her in R.... and i thought the car was going to shake itself to bits!!!!!!!!!! it shook real bad.. and wouldnt move...moved it from R to N and back several times ... the same every time... she about shook herself to bits.. put her in P for a min...( whilst i started to get worried )put her into R again and off she went ,, again no problem.... twice in 2 days gearbox probs!!! Cry  now running o.k...
someone please tell me its the M.A.F, as im fitting a new one soon.. (thanks paul) due to crap m.p.g.... sure someone out there can shed more light on my problem... but please guys ,, make it good news..  Huh many thanks

What's  the mileage ?   what colour is the fluid ? has   reverse  always   been  tricky ?

I  don't think it's the MAF  as  this  has  happened  almost overnight   hasn't it ?

It does sound very  serious and expensive .

right .. been looking through the service history and this is what its telling me...
cars only done 82000 genuine miles (near full service history)
had a exchange gearbox and torque converter at 63000 miles in 06/2003 so gearbox has only done 19000 miles.... cost £980 for that
never had any trouble with the gearbox at all in over 2 years
     started more or less overnight...
     any ideasHuhHuhHuhHuh?
running perfect now, just been out for a drive and realy tested it.. no funny noises sweet gearchanges.. perfect .. seems to be first thing when its been standing overnight ...

Well on that basis I would personally start the following, in this order:

-clean MAF/wait for your new one then if that doesn't help....
-change gearbox oil and filter

Bit odd for it to start overnight, certainly the bosx should not be broken after that mileage!

Not familiar with your model but...
Is car inside or out at night.

Sounds like the engine management system got confused. If error occures again turn off ignition wait a few seconds and restart. This may clear it, or for a major reset disconect the battery for 10 minutes. ( need radio codes. )

Well, Russ (nttyscorp) has had a similar sort of problem with his box (ooer) and no solution has been found yet although fluid and filter change has made it a lot better.

I have been told there a number of solenoids on the box that control these things but to date have yet to find them.

Also, a documented possible cause of the shaking or cattle grid effect as it is sometimes called is due to a worn torque converter bearing (where it slides onto the main box shaft).

Anyway, plenty to check for

regards
