Firstly have you tried 'wriggling' the steering wheel whilst turning the key. Sometimes when parking on a 'lock' the steering wheel needs to be moved slightly to take the pressure off the key. Secondly have you tried another key as either the key or the lock could be worn. A drop of oil on the key may help but don't spray it into the lock.

Sounds like the problem I had, which was due to the ignition lock being worn. I had 2 keys, only one of which would work, so I got a new key cut and that wouldn't work in the ignition. I then replaced the ignition lock and that cured the problem, now all three keys work every time. Try this page.

I would recomend getting a second key though, I have had an occasion where my scorpio has decided to lock itself, with the keys inside.

The new key does NOT have to a chipped key as long as the other key with the chip is close to it . Which makes it a cheaper option otherwise its a case of breaking the old lock , and fitting a new one.

If a new key does not allow you turn the wheel into the " unlock" position then the only way open is to destroy, physically, the barrel and then fit a new one. The way car theives do it basically ... !

Had a similar experience a few years ago with my Granada. Had to call the AA man. He dismantled the column shroud to get to the lock and probed it with his screwdriver. Something in the lock moved and it was then ok. Perhaps this could be the answer.
