Engine not firing 2.3 ('98) R Plate

Yesterday after finally getting the airbag shorted I thought that my problems were over. The car was running well with loads of power and had a smooth tick-over. I parked the car at my brothers for about an hour. When I restarted the engine it was lumpy and sounded like it was not firing on one of the cylinders. I checked all the fuel injector connections and one was lose so I carefully removed, reconnected and re-clipped all three back into place with a small sqirt of WD40 to aid contact. Still no improvement. I remove the spark plug cover, looked at the wiring and seeing nothing amiss removed the spark plug lead nearest the front on the engine to have a look. Replaced the spark plug lead and now the engine will not fire at all. I have checked fused 21, 34, 37 & 42 and also visably checked the loom for any obvious loose connections. Please help. Chris

Hi Highlander, I didn't disconnect the battery when I was fiddling with the connections. Will try your solution and come back to you in about 10 minutes. Many thanks Chris

I was very careful about disconnecting the battery for at least 15 minutes before doing anything with the airbag. I've checked the fuel cut-off - okay. Lots of petrol. Looks like it might be a new wiring loom.

I had a similar occurance of your initial problem on my 2.3. It was a coil pack that had gone down. If after moving the wiring the second pack has stopped firing I would re-check the wiring again particularly where it comes in at the back end.

Had this problem on my previous '95 Scorpio. Wiring under top cover was brittle & exposed in places. Put shrink wrapping around them - no difference, replaced HT leads - no difference, replaced both coil packs - sorted!! £60 each from Fords

Is there anyway to check that the coil packs are faulty?

I've identified the faulty coil pack. Upon very close inspection there's a small crack where the plug fitting meets the main body. Are the coil packs available via Partco etc or is it a Ford Main dealer only part? Also, do I have to replace both of the Coils or can I just replace the faulty one? Many thanks Chris

I seem to remember that I did shop around for pattern parts but everyone I spoke to told me it was a Ford part only. As for replacing just the one, I'm not sure as I just replaced both for the hell of it, but I suppose if only one of them looks to be causing the problem then I don't see why you should have to replace both. I must add that replacing both coil packs sorted my car out, but I wouldn't like to advise you that that is definately the problem. I just took a chance at the time & hoped for the best. P.S. what kind of state was your old matrix in when you took it out?

Chris, Have you read this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm as it has a good picture of damage to one of these units. You could ask on parts wanted and see if anyone has a coil pack.

Hi Simmo, One of the packs is definately faulty, where the spring clip fitting mates to the body of the pack there was a crack and you could clearly see the two wires going into the main bady of the coil. The wiring loom is in good shape, I checked all of the connectors and tbhey all look good. I've just bought 2 new coil packs from my local Ford dealer. Fortunately, my father is an retired Ford employee and I have his discount card. I managed to get the 2 coil packs and the leads for £82. Just waiting for a break in the weather to install (it rains alot in Wales). Thanks for your advise Chris
