is it serious ??

Story from the start - this morning, stopped at traffic lights I had a thudding/bubbling noise from the cooling system which seemed to pass after I got home 5 mins later. Checked under the bonnet and the fans were running but nothing else unusual, unloaded the car and went out again but after travelling about 4 miles stopped at some lights and the engine cut out, after a little while it started again although there didn't seem to be very much power and travelled another few hundred yards and the same again happened, started again and got it to a car park where I parked it up, lifted the bonnet and the only unusual thing I could see was smoke coming from the breather box at the back of the rocker box. (rubber grommet is split tho) went back later and it would appear to start ok although still "hot" so I've left it there while I seek advice (& to cool down, I'll get it tomorrow !), so over to you gents ?? It's a 97 2.3 auto estate by the way

UMM I guess we all went quiet and crossed ourselves. Thudding bubbling airlock, whats your heater been like?? With the engine problem did you get any information from the dash, needles, lights etc? What about oil and water levels, go on give us a clue

Aircon? a dodgy compressor can stall the engine try turning it on and off while the engines running just to eliminate that

have a look around the plastic inlet manifold, particlarly the thermostat housing, you may well find a crack in that area. Russ

been back to the car tonight, to pick a couple of things up, and have been thinking(it's been a bad week !!!). While I was there I started the car but it took a LOT of throttle and after I stopped it it wouldn't start again and was stinking of petrol. No hints from dash/needles/lights BUT I did brake heavily approaching the lights, could I have tripped the cut off switch ?? ps - I tried my obd code reader and that returns NO CODES there doesn't appear to be any coolant or oil loss, levels are ok and heater work(s)(ed) fine

Well, I've been back to it and it started but wouldn't tick over so I called on my friendly green flag man and he has diagnosed it as the head gasket gone As I was 2 mins walk from my local fmd I popped over to enquire as to the cost - they want between 5 & 600 pounds for doing just the gasket, needless to say I got towed home and will try to find somewhere else on monday. So in summing up the answer to my question is YES IT IS SERIOUS !!

Sorry to hear that. Really puzzled at how dealers come up with these sort of figures. Is this eight hours labour and £40 for a gasket?

There is a product called 'K-Seal' which is suppossed to stop any coolant leak & seal dodgy head gaskets permanently. It is made in USA (but available here) & was apparently developed for the Rover MGF which always blows head gaskets. If you put this stuff in it is suppossed to seal the whole system forever !!! Usually £9.95

| I would get a sfiff test done on it before you have the head removed just incase it is not the head gasket. Have you topped up the coolant and checked for leaks? Water pump, hoses, rad etc.

| the green flag man topped the coolant up and it just spat it right back out again thats what led him to diagnose the head gasket, I have found a small independant garage that advertises as "ford specialist" I'll give him a ring tomorrow and see what he says

Have you checked the water pump?, the impeller could be broken which would stop water being pumped around and this could cause alot of bubbling I would imagine. P.S. A new water pump cost me £45.00 from my local auto shop.

reading your first post, it could be a sticking closed thermostat.... does the top hose stay cold with a hot block? the engine will probably be lacking power/pinking and difficult to keep running if it gets well overheated...... mine was! My head gasket seems to have survived, hope yours has too...
