My water pump has started making a hell of a racket which sounds like a bearing has gone in the wheel. Does anybody know if changing the wheel out will fix the problem or do I need a whole new unit i.e, the spidle will be damaged as well?

My bet would be that you're going to need a new pump complete. It would be unusual for the unit to be repairable in that way
