Squealing from Rear Off Side wheel.

Gentleman,my Ultima estate recently developed an intermittent squeal/screech from the ros wheel. There appears to be no pattern to the event. I eventually removed the ros wheel and the noise seemed to be linked to the 'joint'where the disc fits over the hub. As the pads and discs were worn ,although still perfectly usable, I replaced both items and,of course, the n/s as well.  All appeared well for a few miles and then
last night the same problem occurred. Again it was sudden, quite distinctive, and disappeared again. Has anyone experienced similar or suggest a possible cause. All bolts etc were torqued up correctly and coppaslip applied in the appropriate places. The noise is 'rotational' as opposed to creaking of the suspension or so it would seem.

hi mike

how did the calipers look? they could be sticking on the sliding pins.

one of my 'rubber boots' has a small hole in it. i've taped it up, but it should be replaced (not avail from ford, now). means i need to clean the pin every now and again.

do you have the anti squeal 'clips' fitted at the (gap) top of the caliper?

Hi Andrew, I'll check out your first point but I have to say all seemed ok. Yes the 'clip' is in place. Thanks for that. Out with the jack!!.

I once had a stone trapped between the disc a backing plate.
It gave the exact symptoms you describe.
It was impossible to see it, but when I pulled the disc off to investigate, the stone fell to the floor Angry

I would suspect the rear wheelbearing if its a screech read the article on the main site..... thats how mine started just with a squeek!
Even though it appears tight worth checking....It may have started to break up inside and you cannot always feel that through " normal" checks.

Thats where I would be looking !

Thanks Dave. I think that it is the only way to go now that the discs and pads have been done. As you say no 'normal' signs of wear but I'm sure as hell not going to chance a catastophe just for the sake of renewing a wheel bearing. My mate and I did the nearside one about a year ago. Thanks for your input.Mike.

I would lay money on it being the wheel bearing. If it is squealing then that means it is getting very hot (feel the centre of the wheel). If I were you I would check it out because if you carry on driving the bearing will (if it hasn't already) grind deep into the hub until eventually the whole bearing will melt and 'weld' itself onto the hub and the wheel will seize. This happened to me on the M25.....scary

Thanks for all your advice and concern. We took the hub off this morning and it is a carbon copy of 'Snoopys' article, done a while ago, about replacing the rear wheel bearing. Essentially the 'inner' race had worn the shaft of the hub and thus a new bearing would be loose on the shaft and therefore useless. New hub ordered from Ford and hopefully will be delivered overnight for 10 30am Tuesday. Thanks again, Simmo. For info the article is here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rhubs.htm.
