yet another AUTOBOX problem

hi everyone

my 2.3 'r' reg scorpio estat gearbox started doing strange things. from 1st to 2nd was ok, but 2nd to 3rd causes it to rev freely and to get it to go into gear you need to lay of the gas pedal then it clunks in.
no overdrive working either (though only realised i had no overdrive when i fitted a new box ! have been driving without overdrive for nearly 2 years, oh dear what  a waste of fuel)
ok so the box got worse and worse until it was havin trouble engaging drive, then reverse.

strange thing was that if you switch off ignition, then back on, it would engage (makes me think of fault being electronic)
sometimes the 'overdrive' light would flash too.
cleaned maf sensor, no change
so
i bought a second hand box
£300 labour to swap it and put fluid in
£50 for the box (assured it was ok box)

anyway
the faults arte just the same except for the drive engage problem has now gone, but gear changes are still bad from 2-3rd. although i now have overdrive.

so why does it rev out between 2nd and 3rd?
all other gears are smooth

put brand new MAF sensor on. (£90) no change

if you ddrive really careful its not a problem, but if you dont take foot off gas between 2nd 3rd it will rev out until you lay off pedal it then clunks into gear.

3rd to overdrive is ultra smooth

1st to 2nd is ultra smooth

any ideas>?? bear in mind its same fault on BOTH gearboxes
i thought well, its either bad luck and BOTH had same fault
or theres electrical fault somewhere.

anyone else been in this situationHuh

many thanks

Dejavu.... Just got mine back with a second hand box put in. I had the same dreaded rev N thump on 2nd - 3rd, loss of drive etc, etc. I got used to selecting 2 then up into D when the gear engaged, which was OK for a couple of months until a couple of weeks ago that started to show signs of failing as well. I have agonised over these problems for months and talked to a lot of folk about sticky solenoids, oil changes etc, etc, but in the end, I just had to go for a new box  Didnt have the OD problem though.
OD is electronic selected so that could point to something electrical/loom fault and 2-3 change could be the old sticky solenoid gaff. However, now that you are lossing drive, it does not look good I'm afraid. Would suggest you get an OBD done as your first step.

sounds like youve been unlucky withe second box too....when you changed it, was the torque converter changed aswell?
im always wary of buying a second hand box, if you dont know the car it came from, people will tell you its fine, recon'd, guaranteed......when in reality, its just been removed from car and put on shelf without testing.
try your luck in the parts wanted section, you will be told how well it worked/condition/ mileage etc, by the member who removed it......we look after each other here Cheesy

Flashing O/D light indicates a malfunction in the transmission.  Being as the ECU can easily detect open or short circuits (but not mechanical faults such as bust brake bands or poorly pistons) then it would suggest your problem is electrical.  You've kinda proved this by replacing the mechanics (i.e. the gearbox) and the fault still remains.

You'll need to physically trace the loom back from the gearbox, making sure there is no damage to it (a small dentist's type mirror could help) - use feel as well as sight - the loom should be nice and flexible, not stiff or crumbly which could indicate overheating.

Before spending anymore get an ODB scan done
I bought "rough" 24V for bits with no 1st gear.
Scan showed 2 fault codes for duff shift 1 solenoid
Replaced solenoid & changed oil etc - will do solenoid change write up for site when time!!
1st gear found occasionally when little or no torque -suspect brake band problem also = next job
