The fact that the car started after you re-connected the battery is probably a coincidence. Can you smell petrol when the car is turning over?, if not then check that the fuel cut off switch hasn't popped up. This seems like a good place to start.

As with any non-starting petrol engines, you need to determine if the fault is lack of fuel, or lack of sparks.

If there's a good spark at the plugs then check if the fuel pump runs for a second or so when you turn on the ignition.  If there's no spark then check the security LED on top of the dashboard - is it lit or flashing?

If it were to do with the flashing LED on top of the dashboard then surely it would be a key problem & the engine wouldn't even turn over.

Not necessarily. My car had the exact same problem. Would turn over, but not fire. Could try a hundred times if I wanted. Nothing. Didn't help leaving it with the battery connected. Simply wouldn't fire no matter how long I left it. Disconnected battery for half an hour, and it _always_ started.

Never found the cause though, it just disappeared after a while. I suspect the car had the optional PartialSelfHeal(tm) package fitted.

Hi this is a classic symptom on these cars of battery failure they have to be in tip top condition get yourself an appropriate rated new battery and I think this problem will be solved.

Try the fuel pump relay. Relay 17 in battery side fuse box.

It sounds more like a wet fuebox... you have all the classic symptoms, flat battery overnight and won't start but works fine with  a new battery. Got to be the fusebox, do you have a battery cover?

Talking of batteries....my battery kept going flat after I bought the car. I charged it up again but it would only last a while before going flat again. The alternator was fine. The guy in my local auto shop suggested putting in a calcium battery (most new cars have these). I thought I'd give it a go & bought a 510 amp calcium battery (£60) from him & it has not failed me yet.

Good call that, I was having the flicky needles etc for a bit and got a new battery but same happend again about a month later. In the end, went for a similar batt to the above and have not had any problems as well
