idle speed too high

after returning fron garage where new clutch was fitted the idle speed is too high at 1200rpm. Have checked usual air leak etc. What is realy funny is that if I am on a hill with engine turned on and I let car (out of gear) run down the hill the revs go up -- can go to 3000 if I get enough speed up. Why should engine speed up in this situation? I am really tearing my hair out.

The most likely cause is an air leak. The mixture is weakened by the extra air and the ECU detects this via the lamda sensor and adds more fuel to the mixture and so the revs increase. Check all connections in the inlet route and listen for the hiss as the air is drawn in.

Disconnect the speed sensor (on the gearbox - follow the wires) and see if the revs drop back to normal; it might have gotten damaged when the removed the 'box.
