thrust bearing noise?

i have a slight noise when i depress the clutch, its not there when clutch out, and car in neutral... (i have only started hearing it since i replaced the cat last week, was running with the insides of it removed, and it was a little noisy anyway)

To make matters worse, i replaced the clutch, and the concentric thrust bearing in november, with ford parts.... only done around 10000 miles since then...

SURELY its not faulty alreadyHuh

any ideas will be appreciated

p.s.  My car passed its MOT today, and also a taxi test... I was a bit annoyed that i got an observation for corroded sills... 2 little rust blisters  Angry  Angry

A little harsh on the rust blisters... I run a 2.3 as a taxi, & we tend to have problems with taxi's failing due to nails in tyres....which are usually picked up driving into the council yard for the test!!!!
I couldn't say what your problem is, but certainly problems can surface quite early if the new clutch that was fitted was a pattern part. I had a lot of problems with my previous (manual) Scorpio after it went to (don't want to be sued, so will will change the name) Meester Crutch. Please tell me you didn't have it fitted by this company.

no mate it wasnt them, it was my local garage, he is VERY VERY good, and i wont even think of blaming him at this stage, It was mt local mechanic who suggested replacing the thrust braeing at the same time, as the clutch, even although it was quiet.... it now sounds like a thrust bearing noise, and the parts were from ford, as there was little difference in price... could the noise be coming from the gearbox instead?

I have 2 rust blisters, both about the size of a 5p coin, if i had had more time before the test, i would have sorted them out.... now they are on the mot certificate as corroded sills!!! THAT makes me wild Angry

It's a possibility...... after 'meester crutch' had done their dirty work on the car I had to have a new gearbox about two months later, god knows what they did to it. The input shaft bearings had been damaged (obviously from trying to line the shaft up to the engine), the back of the gearbox had hammer marks in it!!!. A new box was £450 from Ford plus £150 for the clutch. I seem to remember I paid in the region of £900 for it to be put right. That was about 5 years ago.

If your trusted mechanic did the job then you have probably had the job done properly. But could still be the input/mainshaft bearings.

i trust him, and i know he is very competent and thorough.... am just wondering if it could be bearings in the box that would give the same symptoms?

I seem to remember that the noise I had after taking it to 'meester crutch' was a grinding noise on tickover, but got quieter when pressing the clutch down. When pulling off, the clutch felt like it was grabbing 'kangarooing'. This is usually the sign of oil on the clutch, but in my case it was a bent input shaft & broken bearings (courtesy of meester crutch).

clutch is working perfectly, nice and light  just makes a bearing sort of noise if i put my foot on the clutch. im hoping its not the parts i have just replaced, but im also hoping it is, as it should be under warranty

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it unless it goes wrong (it's under warranty). Everytime I hear a noise I tend to amplify it in my head tenfold & think that it might be something wrong with the car.
It's like smoking...it's an addiction...& the only way to get over it is.......dunno

I have same problem. Had new clutch fitted and since then I have this grating noise. It does not happen all the time. Just like you it is when clutch is partly pressed. My revs are running high at present due to some other fault and when I went back about the clutch noise my mechanic said it was because of high revs which he could not solve. If you get a solution I would be interested. Best of luck. Tom

well, jonnycab, you say its fine till it goes wrong, but i think it already is wrong, due to the noise its making (it shouldnt be making any) my mate isnt working again till tuesday, but i will be round then, and see what he says.... but i better pay his last bill first!

boy-tom, my revs are steady at 800 ish on idle, so i dont think its got anything to do with the engine speed.

If anyone can tell me if there is any other explanation to a bearing type of noise when clutch depressed, other than the thrust beasring, i would be grateful,

Have you looked here.......'www.drivetrain.com/clutdiag.html'
or here.....'www.clutchwizard.com/diagnosis.htm'
This could give some clues.
