High Level Brake Light

I've recently bought a Scorpio Ultima 12v 1996.
I see that there is no high level brake light fitted to the car. My older Granada Ghia 2.4i had one, and with the level of 'toys' in the Ultima, I'm really surprised that one isn't fitted as standard.

Can anyone tell me if there is wiring in place to fit one, or if it will be a complete fitting job from scratch.

There are no marks to suggest that one has been removed or that the rear parcel shelf has been disturbed in any way.

Confused by this. Seems such a basic thing to miss out   Huh

Some of the early build cars did not come with one as standard but it was part of the safety pack. They were fitted as standard to the 1996 build cars (yours may be a 1995 build, drop me a pm with the reg number and I can tell you)

The wiring is in place, you need to remove the two rear speakers (held on by a 10mm headed nut accesible from bentah the parcel shelf) and then lift away the shelf cover. You will see in the centre of the screen there are two captive nuts which take the bolts which fix the mounting plate to. The wiring for the mounting plate is taped up under where the left hand speaker was (there is a recess and it is in there clipped up) un ravel it and clip to the mounting base. Cut away the carded shelf to go round the plate and refix. The light just clips on.

If you need a light unit, I have one with the base. PM me and I can let you have more details

Was there a high-level brake light for the estate?  Mine does not have one and it's an Ultima,..albeit an early one.

Thanks for this Baz.  I'll have a peek over the holiday, and see what's involved.

Thanks for your offer of a light, but I have already sourced one to fit.

Thank You.

DJW

The estate did come with the high level light just like the saloon and it became standard at the same time. It is basically a revised rear window surround (on the inside) which contains the light at the top. Looks a lot better than the saloon one.....so much so that I took mine out and fitted an led one at the top of the screen from a volvo!!!

Hi Baz,

To save me removing the plastic surround right now do you know whether the wiring will be in place for the high-level brake light?

I have a 95 Estate which does have a high level brake light in and a 96 Estate which doesn't have one, so was it an optional extra?

Just been out to compare the two estates I have, and have removed the brake light. It doesn't have a different window surround, just a hole in it to accomodate the light, and the brake light itself screws to the tailgate.
The estate without the light does have the mounting screw hole for one, but I could not see any wiring for it.

Shame, I was going to fit it to the later model.
