Head Gasket

Evening All, I have just done a sniff test, and it turn't yellow  Sad

I am hoping someone with knowledge of the 24v Cossie can help. I have been told that since the solution has gone yellow then Head Gasket has gone, but the car still runs smoothly.
I am looking for a average price I should expect to pay to have the head gasket skimmed  / how much a garage would charge to do the whole job.

Also, is it a easy job to do and what problems have ppl experienced?

Thanks

Never done one on a V6 but I know it has two!  Grin  Might be worth getting a compression test done so you can see which bank it is that has failed -  after all, no point disturbing a head that's fine (unless anyone here know better).

Do I have to go to a garage to have a compression test / can I buy a kit?

Indeed you can buy a compression tester - not sure how much but I think they're around £20 which is bound to be cheaper than having a garage look at it.

compression test unlikly to show any problems, the 'sniff test' shows prescense of hydro carbons in the coolant, I presume you have a problem or you wouldnt have done it. the job is quite a big one on a 24v, as well as all the injector seals, coolant seals 7 hoses to do it may be worth the bit extra to do the chains & guides, fair guide price at a garage is 1200 to1500, it sounds a lot but it dont half add up quick, its is deffinatly not a job for the inexperianced/ fain hearted as DJ (craig).

Thanks Martin, I have a friend who works on my car and is a local macanic. Do you know if we will have to take the engine and gearbox out, or can we leave the bottom half still attached?
