weird Close Encounter??

Good morning gents.... I had a weird one off (so far) happening a few days ago.... I was accelerating unusually hard for me, the tachometer suddenly went to zero and the engine power died, but kept running. After about a mile the power was suddenly restored to normal and it has been OK since  ...but I have not tried a flat out acceleration again..... any ideas....??
P.S. I am in Norfolk, but not close to that Radar station that you may have seen on the news causing cars to fail

The 2.3 engine (as the rest of the engines for scorpio) has a self built in protection for not over-rev it. It stops the power when you reach about 6.600 rpm. It happend to me twice  . It falls to about 1.200 rpm...and gradualy gets the power back.

I would suspect the crank sensor as the rev-limiter (which is a function of the ECU software) does not affect the tacho. Having said that, the engine should stop without an input from it - though the 2.3/EEC-V combo use sequential injection so the ECU may be falling back on the camshaft sensor for timing...?
