Running out of teddy bears!

Well this morning I came in to work and driving up through the car park I heard a familiar intermitant sort of rubbing/slight grind noise from my o/s rear wheel that increased or decreased with speed. Now, and here is the rub. I had that bearing done only 3 or so months ago. I have jacked it up and there does not seem to be much (if any) play at all in the wheel but I do get an occasional 'twang' sort of noise as I am pulling backwards and forwards in different directions. Also made that noise as the jack started to take the weight off the wheel. After work today, I am going to see if its going to make any more noise. Is there anything else I should be looking at that I have not already done before throwing my hands up, spitting another dummy out and giving my mechanic a call?? £800 and counting since Jan........

I don't think there should be any play at all in the rear wheel bearings WOW £800 spent on it so far this year? , and here's me annoyed at shelling out £30 for a front wheel alignment check to-day ( which made not a jot of difference , Hey Ho ). I would certainly get your mechanic to have a look see.

He would get his mechanic to have a look, but he is probably in Barbados on what Lee has spent so far!

The advice on new bearings is that they should be checked after a few miles to ensure they are still torqued up to the required 200ft/lbs. This is way beyond the 'normal'DIY torque wrench and I manage to borrow one from my local garage. That is a 3/4 drive and the socket is 41mm albeit the old one was 38mm. Could it be that the brake pads are not properly located in the adjuster as the 'peg' on the back has to fit in a groove to ensure the handbrake mechanism works correctly.

When i did my back 2 bearings i did the hub up to 200 Nm which seemed very tight. Should it have been 270Nm? The 'twang' noise could be from a supension bush somewhere which is adjusting itself when you jack it up? Matt

Went down to see my guy today. Turns out BOTH sides were as loose as a Kings Cross hooker, so he tightned them up and we took it for a spin and all is well for the time being. It even sorted out my slightly sqeaking brakes Will have to keep an eye on it though for a bit but fingures crossed...... I have collected all the toys lying about my pram now, but I will keep a few handy just in case BTW, my guy said that the origonal Ford spec (going back to when he was there) was 300Nm!! But he gave out a loud chortle and said in reality, you get no where near that. His trick is to use a new nut every time with locktite, take it up to maximum safe torque and leave it be! He also gave me a full run down on how most places get it wrong and all the in's and out's of how it should be done. He regailed me with a story of when the scorps first came out, the rear bearings were shocking and for a long time before they got them sorted, he spent most of his working week fixing them!

Glad you're sorted. As you say re-check the torque in a couple of weeks but if he's used Loctite and torqued them up to 200 you should be ok. Fingers crossed.
