Engine stalls on sudden acceleration from idle

I own a Scorpio 2L Petrol 16V automatic gearbox from 1996. If I accelerate the engine from idle it sometimes stalls. or the revs go very low (almost stalling ) and then go up rapidly up and down again. and what is much worser :the engine sometimes stalls when it runs idle at decelerations on the road.( throttle closed) this is very dangerous as also the power steering and power assisted brakes fade away. It is then matter to look very quickly for a safe place to park the car or to restart the engine whilst driving. it gives me sometimes a lot of panic! Any suggestions what could be the reason? thanks for any help!

First thing to do is clean the MAF. Mine did exactly the same and the MAF had failed. Try cleaning first. Read this. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.

I have the same thing on mine. When i accelerate sudden from iddle it stalling, missfire etc. I have checked all the sensors, plugs. No air leakes, new spark plugs, new filters all-around. Cleaned the maf, cleaned the throttle body......well nothing has worked for me. I'll get the injectors off and see if cleaning them will help. Also an OBD check could give some clues. In my case, erradic codes have appeard and never commed on again. Beside this inconvenient the engine runs smooth as silk and have lots of power.
