Can't code remote
« on: May 4th, 2006, 9:13pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Like it matters... (see my OD flashing post)

But I got my new remote in the post today and I can't code it. The 'swtiching on and off three times' procedure doesn't provoke any reaction from the car - i.e. no beep. Anyone know why?

Do I have to be using the master key for this? Because I ain't got one - the car came with one non-Ford chip key. It's booked in with Ford for new keys next week.

Hey

on the main site it says this

"With the key in the ignition, turn the ignition on to the I position, then off and then again three times, then once more and leave it at I. A beep will sound showing that the system is set to program."

to me that says to the on off bit 3 and a half times?

i havnt heard of this on the site but maybe the unit that beeps has failed? i dont know if it's the same unit for the headlights on, not in park beebs

Aye, I printed it out and sat in the car for half an hour trying every possible permutation I could think of.

Does it mean position '1' as printed on the switch. I.e. one click from the key out position? Or one click further in - i.e. when the dashboard lights up.

I think I tried both of those. No beep.

On mine you put the key in (pos 0) and turn to pos I then back again.  On the third turn to pos I leave it there and you should hear a chime.  Press the 'lock' button on the remote (or is the 'unlock' button?) and it will chime again.  Finally, turn key back to pos 0 and it will chime one last time.  The remote is now programmed to the car.

Nah, still doesn't work. Did you use a Ford chipped key? Is it possible that a copy key won't give you the chime, i.e. won't let you code new remotes?

Perhaps Ford Dealer can sort it when they code new keys next week (if the thing will run).

Mine is the early diesel Scorp so doesn't have PATS or coded keys.  Just uses a remote to switch alarm on/off and do the central locking.

If the cars battary is low/broken, the alarm system shuts down.

This could cause the problem you are having.

Nah, battery is fine, starts a treat every time.

Does anyone know if any key that will start  the car will also allow this remote coding to take place?

it chimed on the 4th time turning it on to (and leaving it there)

you have to turn the key quite quickly (i used the black key with the red dot)

then i pressed the unlock button and it chimed again

It does not require a red key  to programme the remote. Just a key programmed to the car with the red patch on it .

The (only) key I have is a non-Ford aftermarket one which has a chip inside and starts the car but hasn't got a red square on the end.

It's booked in with Ford to get new keys cut and coded this week, perhaps it will all work then. Perhaps I can also persuade them to do the remote at the same time without charging an extra £50...

Well if that is the case then the PATS is inoperable! but I suspect that someone has taped an key with the chip in it somewhere near the ingnition lock .... I would remove the cover on the steering wheel to check.... ALL the Scorpios had PATS and thereby require a PATS coded key to start it.

No, the key has a chip inside it (it unscrews and you can see the wee cylinder inside).

Also, I got a (non-chip) key cut from it, and that opens the doors but doesn't start the car (it fires then instantly dies).

So the PATS is all okay I think. Just can't provoke this bloody chime!

Will try again today...

Cheers!

Just done this myself as my remote went pear shaped on Tuesday.
Took the remote apart and cleaned the contacts using some tape-Head cleaner as advised.
Put it carefully back together again with two brand new batteries Lithium CR2016.

Cleaning the remote is really easy, so don't be put off by doing it.

Went out to the car with my normal key (not the red master), turned the ignition to position 1 three times, and then on the 4th turn left it in this position. Chime sounded.
Pressed the UNLOCK button on the remote. Turned the ignition OFF again and waited for a chime. That's it......all done.

Batteries were £1.00 each (Sony) from my local Car Boot. BEWARE of big electrical retailers who want to charge you about £3.75-£4.75 EACH for batteries!!

Thanks again to this BRILLIANT site for yet more help from the Main Repair index.

Does the chime happen when anything else happens? i.e. is it the same chime for leaving the headlights on with the ignition off and door open? Or leaving the gearbox in D?

Because I don't get any warning chimes in the car at all. Perhaps my 'chimer' is broken/disconnected?
