I've noticed that my 2.3 is slightly pinking when accelerating. Any suggestions?

hi there check the spark plugs. are they tight and gapped correctly? also check the wiring to them. then try to plug the small vac pipe to the egr valve. see if that makes a difference. hth

Is engine temperature normal? If higher than usual then may be a weak mixture (check for air leaks around induction system), or could be a faulty knock sensor if fitted (will be low down on the cylinder block itself). Darren

Yes, the engine temperature is fine with plenty of water. But I must admit, it does only seem to pink when it has properly warmed up. The car isn't mis-behaving in any way at all, just this slight pinking noise.

The pinking is getting worse now. It seems to do it all the time under load. I've checked the plugs, wiring, coils, EGR pipe, but haven't checked the knock sensor as I'm not really sure where it is, what it looks or how to check it. It's starting to sound like a Cortina I once had. Any advice guys?

hi there cracked exhaust manifold? have you tried running with the egr disabled? just plug the small vac pipe with a screw. see if that helps.

I have run the car with the EGR pipe taken off & plugged up all evening, & have not heard any more pinking (well done scorpio_man). So the egr is obviously the problem. If anyone else on here has had this experience, then was it the EGR valve itself that was faulty? & if so did you replace it or overhaul it?
