got a bad leak on my tdi, the reservoir bottle needs topping up every 5 to 10 miles. is there any component in the power steering thats prone to leaking? i.e. a certain hose connection etc, or is it just a case of go through everything till i find the leak? cheers, Phil

The first place to look,if there are no obvious signs of leakage is the rubber gaiters at each end of the rack. They can hold a fair quantity but you should be able to 'feel' it or even see that the gaiter is swelling.

There is also a cooler mounted just behind the front bumper (not the long thin radiator - that's for the engine oil) - could possibly be leaking if damaged or corroded. You need to stand it over some paper or similar and turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine running to build up hydraulic pressure. Once done a few times turn the engine off and leave it for a while. Hopefully you should then be able to find where it is leaking from. If it needs topping up that often then the leak should be fairly obvious. Darren

You should get a better idea of where it's leaking by removing the engine bay splashguard, and as Sector-9 says with that amount of topping-up it should be easy to pinpoint the leak.

cheers for the replies, havent had a chance to look at it properly yet, but a quick look suggests its coming from one of the cooling pipe joints...
