Starter Sensor

AngryHi All
I am new to this.

I have a 2.3 Ultima automatic1996 which til now has been almost trouble free.

I now cannot start the car as it appears that the computer is not reading that the car is in the "P" position and consequently when I turn the ignition nothing happens as if I have left the car in gear.

I have tried to find the sensor but I am not sure what to look for and if found how to rectify ( I am a bit of a dipstick when it comes to mechanics)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There's a relay (the auxillary fusebox I think) which allows/disallows the starter motor from running depending on gear position.  Not sure what number it is but on the manuals it is missing and there is a link fitted between the two switch contact terminals instead.

It could be the switch itself on the gearbox, but the relay is easier to check!

Just for interest, how do you know it is related to the gearbox cutoff?  Obviously you can't push start an automatic but have you got it running by operating the starter directly?

Just a thought, have you tried starting it in Neutral?

Thanks Darren

I will look at the relay if I can fathom it out.

Yes I have tried starting in the normal manner but there is no response whatsoever, not even a noise although all the other electricals are working ok.

A;though the handbook says it can be started in Park or neutral I have never been able to start it in neutral.

Before it gave up the ghost completely it was recently being a bit tempermental and I sometimes had to wiggle the gear lever in order for it to start but even this not successful now

Try this; take the car out of Park, then put it back it. Now rock the car slightly until you hear a click. Try starting again.

Do this without the handbrake on, taking care not to let the car roll away of course  Wink

Thanks for the suggestion Dave - Sorry it didn't work.
Have given up and it has now been collected by the garage.

I will let you all know the outcome and hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg.

Thanks for your suggestions

Regards

Roll Eyes Have just got he car back.
It transpired that there was no power to the starter motor and the garage traced the wiring back to the ignition switch and found a poor connection.
Including recovery of the car I am £108.10 lighter.

Anyway, thanks to those who responded with advice. It was greatly appreciated.

Best Regards
