hi fellas heres one for you, a guy i know through work has just renewed the timing chains on his cossie. he put the engine at tdc and locked the flywheel. when he took the rocker covers off the numbers on the cams did`nt line up they where in the opposite position. he removed the chains then repositioned the cams so that the numbers lined up. when everything was reassembled he turned the engine by hand. it moved freely, he spun the engine on the key with the spark plugs out, again all was sweet with no banging or clattering. when he came to start the the engine it ran very roughly for a short time with what he describes as a light knocking from right hand bank (looking from the radiator).with the numbers lined up the cams on the left hand bank (no 1 piston ) are the exhaust valve lobes are pointimg to 2 o`clock and the inlet valve lobes are at ten o`clock. is this the normal position for tdc? is the engine broken? thanks tabs

hi no expert on the 24v.think he did not have no1 cylinder at TDC,thats why cam numbers were out of sync,so by changing position of cams and not turning crankshaft as well has put cam timming out.not sure if any valve to piston damage would occur.but am sure one of the 24v owners will have some input for you. here is a link for the 24v strip down http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/tc.PDF hth

Sounds like valve timing is now well-out. If the engine was running fine before then I'd have left the timing as set previously. I do remember reading about some difference with the camshaft-to-sprocket D plates which caused exactly this problem - apparently Ford changed the angle of them at some point and it affects the valve timing if the wrong ones are fitted. Can't remember where I read it though, possibly on the main site... Darren

Yeap your mate has made a big mistake. Why would he not think the timing marks would not line up Set it correctly & see what it's like. He will either be lucky or not.

thanks for the replies. aparently it is possible to have the engine at tdc and for the timing marks to be out of allignment! he measured the height of no 1 piston with the crank set to the timing mark. then turned the crank one full revolution again to the timing mark the measurement was exactly the same. also the strip down instructions say "set engine to tdc then lock the flywheel" before you have removed the rocker covers, you therefore can`t see the camshaft positions with the crank locked. will pass on the info and keep you informed. thanks tabs
