Automatic Gear warning and Electrics problems

Hi everyone.

A friend has given me his 95 Ultima 2L16v Automatic on the condition I sort it out and don't scrap it unless I have to.

I've (so far) fixed the door locks, the remote, replaced a type, cleaned the MAF and as a result smoothed out the gearbox especially at high speed.

Now the following things have got me baffled.

It's recently started making a continuous warning tone when I press the silver button on the gear selector and it stays making the noise all the time while driving.  The only thing I've found that can stop it is to rev the engine hard just after starting and select D then, this sometimes works without it making the noise.

Also none of the interior lights work, have changed round the fuses and relays I've seen mentioned on here with no joy.  I've tried the central timer diagnosis test but it doesn't seem to work.  But the remote works fine - which seems to depend on the central timer.

Is it worth replacing the central timer just in case?

To prempt questions, water has got into the fuse boxes in the past but they are dry now and there doesn't seem to be any obvious damage.

I'm all set to have a weekend of electrical forraging to work this out but any ideas you guys might have would be great!

sounds a bit like you need to remove the fusebox next to the battery strip it and give it a good clean. if its been wet it will be corroding between the multilayers inside.

There are posts about that awful noise on here somewhere, will have a search.

I had a similar problem with my interior lights and the gearbox warning when I had an aftermarket alarm removed from the car. Basically, the chap that did it cut the feed to the interior lights. This messed around with the gearbox warning circuit (apparently) and caused the sound to come on all the time except when in Park.

The guy who fixed it said that if I removed the main bulb from the interior light that would have temporarily stopped it!

Worth a look!

Just to reafirm what Fordcos said most of your problems(Electrical Wise) will lay in the n/s fuse box, remove, strip and clean, there is a post on this forum that will take you through stage by stage, approx 5 hours  to do, some one shortly will provide the link to these instructions, although these fuse boxes are often on ebay selling as used items I purchased one for a tenner, fitted and all ok now, anyway good luck your doing a fine job.

Hey just to let everyone know - I replaced the fusebox to no avail - checked the timer module itself and it was all corroded inside - replaced it and everything now works fine!

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I've been playing with this problem today, and have found that if I disconnect then reconnect the timer module the noise stops until I open a door or turn on the interior lights (which don't work) but it sets off the noise again. So I tried all the systems that work with the timer and it's only the interior light circuit that trips the noise. Anybody got any ideas Huh

Hi Gull, Snoopy, and evryone else,

I had exactly the same problem, chime sounding if auto gear selector not in P and interior lights not working.

Thanx to your posts, I was able to solve the problem real quickly: replaced relays 5 and 16, replaced fuse 36, cleaned and refitted the door switch (driver's side) and all works fine again ...

Thanx to you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings Hans

Hi I am a new kid on the block and have been reading with interest the problems with the audio alarm when moving from park. Would appreciate any hep/direction as my problem became serious last night. Bought a 1995 2.9 Scorpio Ultima Estate a week yesterday. Last Sunday, I got the alarm up when pressing the button to move from park. The alarm stayed on in drive but the car seemed fine. On Tuesday the interior lights failed. I work away from home so not had time to investigate. Yesterday my girlfriend got in the car, started it up and it shot forward at speed, mowing down a garden gate and wall causing a lot of front end damage. The car was in park and the handbrake was on. She said the engine revved really hard and the cart shot forward in an instant. Any suggestions? The car has gone away for a police investigation as to the fault but would appreciate any members comments about what might have caused this.

12v or 24v? I guess the ECU gives it a little extra throttle when starting, so the revving part could be normal, then again, it could be something different.

Dundeeboy,   a serious point,   what's more likely :-

The  car   moving off at speed  when  the  gear  selector   is   in   P   and   the Handbrake on   (   an almost impossible scenario )

or,    your   girlfriend   can't   drive  an   automatic    and  is telling  large Porkies.  Roll Eyes

No porkies I'm afraid. Car was still in Park and handbrake on when I got there. It only moved 20ft but gate and wall in the way. Fortunately it was not in a cark park full of people. We've had Vauxhall Senator and Carlton autos for years. Could this problem with the alarm being on when pressing the change button have moved on to a more sinister fault. How can the car move when in Park?
