Oil leak
« on: May 17th, 2006, 2:17pm »

I have recently noticed that I am losing engine oil. I've had a gander underneath & it seems to be dripping from the front of the engine at the bottom of the timing chain cover.
The engine has only done 38,000 miles since it was fitted a couple of years ago.
Any suggestions?....I am hoping it is not what I think it is.  Cry

You sure its not just running to the lowest point before dripping off? Mine did this with a cam cover gasket leak, made a right mess which made finding the actual leak more difficult  Undecided

It's a 2.3, & my worse case scenario is a crank shaft oil seal Cry Cry

I've tried the Wynns stuff & it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

The car is going in the garage next Tuesday for a gearbox oil change, so I'll ask him to check it out.

Even if it is the front crank seal it's not too bad a job - you don't have a timing belt to remove, just the pulley to be able to get to it.

Thanks sector-9....you've cheered me up Smiley. I'd have a go at it myself, but as I use the car to earn a living (taxi) then it has to be done pronto (by the garage).
My Mk1 Granada has just come out of winter storage & that is keeping me busy at the moment Cool.

Yup...pretty sure it's the crankshaft front oil seal thats leaking.
Having not done this job before, i've been searching the site, but can't seem to find the procedure.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If it's too long a job then it goes to the garage.

Not sure what space you have in front of the pulley but if you can get a puller on there with out too much bother it's not that hard.
Ford tools 21 147 & 21 051 make it easy if you can borrow them.
