Engine cutting out after ignition

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Ultima 2.9 Cosworth off a friend and absolutely love it (not sure it is the best first car but hey!) but it has problem I wonder if anyone can help me (and him) with?

It cuts out after ignition a lot, cold mornings, stutters, revs go up and down (between 500-1200), just have to keep restarting it for about 5/10 minutes whilst it all settles down and does its thing. I have been told by my mate that it wil not do it in the summer when the temps pick up but I have been out there on a warm morning and it has done it.

Now, the guy who sold it to me, good friend, told me to come here. He has tried an awful lot to fix it, and he is pretty switched on. He has told me to say all this (as I aint got a clue!!).....MAF is new, vacuum system is sound, egr is sound, iscv valve is new, inlet system is sound.

Over to you guys (and girls) for a knockout answer.

(oh and where is a cheap place for Brake pads and discs, Ebay £19 for a pair of pads is the cheapest so far)

Thank you very in anticipation.

Hi Steve,

welcome to the site  Cheesy

First thing I would suggest it to look at the fuel pump relay. Make sure the contacts are clean and it is sitting properly in the fusebox. You will find it in the fuse box next to the battery, its the green/violet one.

Also make sure that the battery and fuse box cover is in place to keep water out.

Cheers  Smiley

If it only happens when the engine is 'cold' but clears when warmed up then it could be that the choke isn't working.  Before anybody corrects me, the 2.9i engine doesn't have a choke, but relies on the engine management system to sense the engine temperature and add extra fuel until it's warmed up.

The thing that senses engine temperature is the engine coolant temperature sensor and this tells the management sys how hot the engine is.  If this sensor is broken or reporting an impossible temperature then the management sys will ignore it altogether and assume the engine to be about 60degC.  It's possible this is why the engine isn't running very well until it's warmed up.  Another symptom would be using a lot of fuel (though it is a 2.9 so don't expect much mpg from it!).

I don't know where the temp. sensor is on the V6 - in any case be careful as there are two (one just works the gauge on the dash) - but somebody here will know.  It might be worth replacing that; they aren't too expensive.  If you have a multimeter you can test the resistance across the sensor as the engine warms up - it should start high and then drop as the temperature rises...

Hi Dave

Thanks for the above, I have checked those 2 things and the relay in perfectly and clean and dry and the cover is in place as well. the whole area is dry and looks fine.

I will get my mate to check what Sector 9 has written and go from there, (as I have no idea what it means!! Roll Eyes

try lockheed pads available at most motor factors at a reasonable price. you have to think about safety with that much power. dont forget you will need a 7mm alen key for the front and a tool to wind in the rear pistons.
