12v Auto box problem

Hi all
I was wondering if any one could give me a clue to what could be wrong with my gear box. It seems to engage ok first of all but if you select either reverse or drive after you have stopped, it somtimes does not select the gear. You can turn off the engine, restart it and it will engage ok. This morning as I was going to work it started to slip nearly straight away after a couple of yards, I stopped, turned of the engine restarted, and all was ok. Not a sign of any problems on the way home so I'm at loss to know what could be wrong.
Any suggestions would be gladly received.

First thing to do is to check ATF for correct level, start the engine apply foot brake and take the gear selector through all postions a couple of times leave in park and then check level also the condition of the oil, it should reddish to brown and no burning smell .

Firstly check the oil level, but assuming this to be correct :- The box in your 12 v should be the "old faithful" A4LDE and it sounds like the governor is sticking. The problem is of course that for debris to be contaminating it and making it stick it had to come from somewhere, so sounds like box failure is imminent. You could get it cleaned out together with an oil and filter change but it may only be a short term fix(weeks), before it starts again.

One peice of advice when checking the level "MAKE SURE IT IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE" It needs to be HOT before you get and accurate check on the level...

Are you getting any O/D light flashing or other symptoms?
Mine does all this too, I think it must be loom damage, but am still working on a repair.

If the oil level is O.K then I would go for the oil & filter change as said.
It might be just old oil & a blocked filter causing it.
If there is something damaged you will be able to see when you do the job, then it would be best to replace the box.

Hi Andrew, basically unbolt and drop pan off (use a big bucket cos theres no drain plug), filter is held on by one 10 mm bolt. Inspect pan before cleaning it, if there is like a grey brown mud or any metallic bits in the pan you will be looking at a rebuild soon. Allow all oil to drain out by not refitting filter or pan for half hour or so. Then clean pan thoroughly and refit with new filter and pan gasket. Then before starting engine, fill up firstly with 4 litres of fresh fluid, and then have another 2 litres standing by, start engine, add 1 litre, then run through gears from P down to 1 and back, topping up as neccesary. (wipe dipstick 2 or 3 times between each top up / reading as oil hangs in the fill tube). This transmission will take at least 5 litres when the pan has been off. Hope this helps you but to be honest, in my experience changing fluid and filter once problems have started is usually a waste of new oil !! Sorry to be a prophet of doom but I have spent the last 20 years rebuilding Auto boxes !! Regards, Dave

I had a similar problem on my 24v when bought. It turned out to be low on fluid due to a leaking 'box sump gasket.
From memory, 5 litres of Dexron III cost about £20, the sump gasket and filter cost somehwere around the £20ish mark from Ford, and the labour for the garage to do it was £55. Worth a go, it totally transformed by gearbox

Dave2302 yeah I would agree with changing fluid & filter on a car 5 or less years old is a waste of time if it has a fault but some cars are 11 years old now, it does make a difference to some but not all.
Worth trying.
But if you have lots of metal in your pan you should look for another box.
Andrew it's a dirty job so be prepared for a mess
