Pfft sound when revving.

I've been experiencing some lack of power on my 2.3 16v when i depress the throttle too fast, and when i tried to investigate this, I noticed that when i rev the engine quickly, there is a pfft sound coming from the back left of the engine (when standing in front of the engine ), and then it revs. If i pull the throttle wire slowly, there is no such sound, and the engine revs normally. There is perhaps a 1 sec delay from when i pull the wire, until the engine revs. Can anyone shed some light on this? Andy

I had a similar problem with my wife’s Escort. Lack of power and strange noise from engine compartment. Originally I thought it was the catalytic converter blocked but eventually traced it to the back box had failed and blocked up. Simply had it diagnosed then replaced at the local exhaust centre. Hope this helps?

A firend of mine had the same problem on a mondeo, when the accelerator was suddenly pushed the engine was starting to stall. The problem was the spark plugs, one of them was letting a spark to jump from under it right to the engine block. Then engine was a 2.0 litre one and has long spark plugs just as the 2.3 has.
