Having only bought my Ford Scorpio Ultima in February I noticed that it had a tendency to give you a kick in the rear when the changing gear. It then completely gave in 5 weeks after! Obviously the car dealer knew nothing about the worn gearbox!!!!
Anyway at a cost nearly equal to the car I had the gear box and torque converter reconditioned, replaced, whatever he did. But, and here finally is my question. It still kicks between 1st and 2nd up and down. Most of the other gears are fine. The mechanic says he can do nothing more to fix it and thinks it might be down to electrical component which is doing this. Is this correct or has he just done a poor job?
Many thanks for your help

Hello and welcome  Smiley

Have a look at the Fault Finding page http://fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm and scroll down to TRANSMISSION CONCERNS. I'd give the MAF a clean to start off with.

Does it only do it if you lift off suddenly in 1st? If so then you could have the old EECV programming. My cossie does this if i'm flooring it and then let off quickly it kicks up into 2nd gear.

Your dealer should have had it given an OBII scan, which should have given an idea of the origonal fault. Does it rev real high, then jump into gear? This would point to a sticky solenoid or a bad section of loom providing a bad voltage. I had this before the rest of my box failed and although a MAF clean (also replaced to be sure) helped, it never removed the fault. Was the recon carried out under warrenty??

Unfortunately there was no warranty with the car. I forked out myself. The car seems to run normal, maybe a little low on the revs but apart from that pretty good. But this kick up and down 1 and 2 is still apparent. I don't remember talking about a scan done it. Would a Ford main dealer still perform such a test on a 95 car? or is it something alot of garages will have access to?

Ouch Sad A FMD will charge you about £85 +VAT to have an OBD done but a local guy may do it for about £65 dead, best to ring around but your mechanic should be covering that one! As far an the 'elecrical component' as your mechanic calls it, this can only be as I stated above, both of which should have been checked for funtionality when the recon was carried out. Was this taken to a proper autobox specialist, or was it just done through your mechanic guy? The reason I ask is because there are a few guys out there that claim to recon boxes but do a very poor job at actualy getting to the crux of the problem in the first place and charge you £700 odd for the priv. Try MAF as above but I would be having a strong word with your mechanic to get to the bottom of it. You have paid hard cash to have a problem sorted, and it is not satisfactory. Most reputable specialists provide a warrenty period on the work they carry out.
Hope this helps.
