Screeching noise from rear
« on: Jun 14th, 2006, 8:54am »

Hi,

Recently I've developed a screeching sound from the rear of my car that only happens when the car moves less than 10 mph. I've read up on the forums and thought of looking at the bearings but from what I've read it should sound worse when going faster, mine goes away at high speeds?? any ideas ?

Sounds like the bearing.... don't delay. Get it checked or you'll have a total failure. If you catch it early you may not need a new hub... Fingers crossed.

I think Simmo is probably right...I'd lay money on it.
Get it sorted before it makes a right mess of the hub Wink

Same here, mine only showed at low speeds but defo was the bearing saved the hub on time as I had it checked within a couple of days

Welcome to the scorp! I tend to drive for a bit each week with the stereo off to listen out for any new and interesting sounds Grin If I find one I dont like or I'm skint, I turn the volume up until I can do something about it Wink

If its squealing you will almost certainly need new bearings and possibly a new hub. Read this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rhubs.htm.  If you do the job yourself you will need a large torque wrench as the bearing requires tightening to 200ft/lbs which is outside the range of most DIY wrenches. You will also need a 'brake rewind' tool and a 41mm socket .

Two things can be wrong. Most of the time a bearing inside the unit would have failed and will start to destroy the rest of the bearings/hub and is serious (can lead to wheel loss!!). In this case, you have to replace at least the bearing unit completely and possably the hub (expensive bit) if it has serious scoring/grooved damage.
Sometimes, you may be lucky and the wheel nut may have worked its way a bit loose, this can cause a slight squeak/rubbing noise at low speeds. In this case it may just need a tighten but most of the time its bearing off!
Either way, if you jack it up and there is any play at all, you will need to get it checked out (if its something you cant do yourself).

Sometimes as with my last one you do NOT get the feeling of play in the bearing. But the noise is MOST likely to be the bearing failing. If its not then it really is only a 1/2 hour job to check.

Not being technically minded I finally dropped my scorp into my local garage expecting a nice 200 quid bill. Needless to say I was most pleased when I got a call saying all bearings seemed fine and was in fact a problem with the brake pads warping\moving. £40 to have them all replaced Smiley made my day!!!

Well done PeteB. I've had the same noise coming from my front brakes before & that was warped discs, but never the back discs. I thought that the rear discs/pads wouldn't get hot enough to warp as they don't take as much pressure as the front discs/pads.
I could be wrong though Smiley

if the rear calipers start seizing, that will cause a build up of heat, as they can stick on, like mine did......

You can usually notice with the handrake having more play than nornal, if the calipers are sticking on.
