Idle problem on 12 V..

I have a 12V with some idle problems. When I start the engine from cold, I always have to give it some revs, in order to prevent it from stalll. Now the engine also stalls when it is hot; eg. when you stop for a red light. Pretty annoying. I have checked the IACV (cleaning, and adding some oil), the spark plugs, the vacuum hoses - but still the problem occurs. To start with the engine caused me problems when cold, but now idle problems occurs all the time. What to do next..? ScorpioInDK

Might need the IACV changing they are prone to having this fault, and sometimes new one is the only answer.

How do I check for "false" suction? A hissing sound; but would this sound be rather loud? I think it is hard to tell, when the engine is running..

is it possible to run the engine without the IACV running? One could maybe try to check the function of the IACV by unclipping the switch..

It cotrols the idle. Basically it will open when engine is cold so it can run at fast idle or choke (ecu injects more fuel) , then it will close when warm to let the engine run at normal idle. If you disconnect it it should be shut all the time. Any leaks in that area can cause your problems or if the thing aint working right.

If the IACV gets disconnected the engine stalls. On my 2.3 it has a gasket between it's body and the intake mainfold

If a 12V keeps stalling when you disconect the IACV your timing is probably out or something is at fault. The revs should drop a little & idle gets a little rough that's all. Disconnecting the IACV is one of the ways you can put the engine into service mode. Some have a gasket others sealer either way it has to be air tight.

Dear friend, I had exactly the same problem with a 2L 16V automatic. Bad and unstable idling going up and down between 1500 and zero revs. Revs to zero and engine even stalling when idling on the road in Drive! Extremely dangerous as the power steering and brake assistance fade away... I have checked everything what is suggested in this forum. But finally it turned out to be simply the adjustment of the IACV. One simple turn on the adjustment screw of the IACV and the idling was perfect!! It is just the same effect as giving more or less idling air to a good old carburettor. The adjusting (cross) screw is located at the top of the solenoid and is covered with some sticky stuff in order to prevent it to turn on its own.So if you don't see it ,scratch the sticky stuff away. good luck! | Presumably this applies to the 2.3 as well? Mine is open about 1-2 mm, it's nice and free but the spring holds the valve off the seat. No good screwing in the adjuster. Car generally runs fine - occasionally hunts when first started. Wondered if this might be the cause of very heavy fuel consumption in the first mile or so. Dave
