Speed control only works above about 28mph. Press top left button on steering wheel to enable speed control, then middle right button to set the current speed - the green light on the instrument cluster will light (very dimly if car lights on) and car should maintain set speed. Press top right button to temporarily disengage control (but remember set speed), and again to resume. Press middle right button to set speed and to increase slowly. Press bottom right button to decrease slowly. Control will remember whatever speed is set when you release the buttons. Bottom left button turns cruise control off altogether and clears the speed memorised. Assuming speedo works fine then it's likely to be the clock spring behind the steering wheel, or possibly one of the pedal switches for brake (or clutch if fitted). Darren

Make sure the cable is attached to the throttle linkage as it has a habit of coming off, particularly if any work has been done in that area of the engine.

thanks guys, I have a hand book with the car though it explains though not as clearly as Darren, , nothing tells me where any parts are, other than those parts you guys have suggested to look at. I have a qualification in electronics and following wiring / circuits is not difficult, just needs a bit more idea where to start, no signs of any lgreen lights on the dash, but then I have a proper Ford fitted towbar and wiring kit and still the blinker on the dash does not work when the trailer is hitched. I will look at whats been suggested and get back to you aureus

Well on my diesel the cruise control actuator is next to the RH headlamp - there is a long throttle cable connecting it to the engine and it has a multiplug. I believe there is a relay for it above the glovebox (pull open the flap in the 'roof' of the glovebox to access), and the green operating light is on the LH side (beneath the temp. gauge), top row, middle lamp. There is a switch on the brake pedal, and one on the clutch pedal (if manual gearbox) - if either of these aren't set properley then the cruise control won't work and the light won't come on - they are designed to disengage it (though keeping set speed in memory) if you brake or change gear. There is also the speed sensor which is mounted on the gearbox; though this also operates the speedo so you'll know if it doesn't work! Darren

Thanks Darren, speedo works fine, in the top of the glovebox is only a yel;lo relay loose, a read box down to the right. I dont have a twizzle neck, to get into arkward places. in fact wear a stainless steel collar to support it, I call it the fem version of frankenstiens bolts Thanks again Darren I will have a look, maybe poke my dig webcam in there aureus

The information in the workshop manual is wrong. It is as described for the later diesels, but the earlier ones do not have a full-electronic control injection pump and use the same mechanical actuator system as the petrols. Darren

Thanks Darren & all Not many places in Southend to exceed 30mph, but I tried it pressing the white button left, then the + button right middle and off it went, so it works, cant see a GREEN light though, but I needs to get used to using it. Seems I also had a Ford Escort Battery on the car according to the RAC whom arranged with a cheap local compant to fit a proper Ford Scorpio size Battery and strangely many other things now seem to work. Thanks all on this problem , have a couple more to list. aureus
