sliding sun roof

Dear all
On my Ford Scorpio 2.0 Estate N reg, the electric sun roof opens electrically but it will not tilt.
Having once been driving along merryly and got shat on by a seagal, which can be quite heavy and not nice, so I dont like the roof open I would like it to tilt, but it dont.

Is this a switch problem or what??

can you hear the motor running when you try to tilt the roof?
common fault on the scorpio is the sunroof seal toward the rear of the roof, mine did the same....
what you can try is whilst holding the switch to tilt the roof, try pushing the roof GENTLY to see if this makes a difference...

Are you pressing the right button?

The FRONT button (ie nearest the windscreen) closes the roof when it's fully open, but another press tilts the roof glass.

Only a thought?   Cheesy

According to my information, namely the handbook the rocker switch when in the closed position, when pressed again goes into tilt mode, nothing happens, thats the button closest to the windscreen.
The white open of the rocker towards the back of the car opens the roof normally and is OK, I am an old fart and I like all my moving parts well lubed in grease, also stops rust as sun roofs on cars collect rain water, which I believe there are 4 run aways pipes from that area, so it should all work, but dont tilt

Try Craigs advice, namely pushing the rear of the glass up GENTLY whilst running the motor.
It may simply be just 'gummed' to the seal.

You haven't said if the motor is working? If not, then you're going to have to sort that out first.

Have a look at this for general maintenance.

Thought I was clear <smiles>, the motor runs to open & close the sliding sun roof, nothing happens when the closed button is repressed to go to tilt mode.
Under central cowling where the which is in the roof front, there is a spare lead with 2 wires but nothing to connect it too, the motor is connected and you can see what I think is an emergency winder go round. but it does not tilt, I might be blonde and in essex the motor works to only open and close the sun roof

What does the popup Adjuster guide do, when you close the sunroof electrically it closes and then raises just to car roof level, my old sierra use to go one more than that and effect a tilt, is the tilting mechanical or electrical??

hi-when you press switch forward when roof closed,it should go on to a mechanical cams for tilting.when you shut the roof ,does it close at the right height or do you have to manually adjust it to sit at the right level.if so you may have to adjust /syncronise the motor to the roof.or the cam mechanisem may be stuck/corroded,never seen one but  Undecided.

Hi Aureus,

The tilting is electrical.

Parts wear though. If you cannot hear the motor whirring at the tilt stage, then that's probably where the fault lies.

If you can hear the motor trying to do something, then the glass panel is sticking and might just need coaxing, and then cleaning/lubricating. The seal frame corrodes badly on these cars and causes these type of problems.

hi Tony & Meg
The sunroof opens and closes electrically just fine, as a qualified electronics bod I have had the cowling off to show the motor in its entirity, looks new.
When it closes motor goes till it closes then shifts up to be inline with the roof and make a seal, if you then re-touch the close switch my information is it should tilt, but much silence is heard no motor & no noises, just does nothing.
Its annoying as I like the tilt mechanism rather than an open roof.

What I wants to know is what the spare loom which as 3 pins on does, which is hidden tnto the motor /interior lamp cowling

It sounds like the connector for the auto-dipping mirror on some models.

you should still hear the control cables, pulling the cams and roof up,onto tilt.if its quiet some things stuck or out of sync.if its stuck better watch and not strip the nylon gear on motor.why not try and get a manual handle and take motor off and try it by hand.

A friend just told me that the garage I bought it off may have put a granada mark 3 motor on, prior to buying the sunroof did not work, so I shall have to take the cowling off, get the part number and phone Fords to find out what part the motor is to be sure as I am told that Granada mark 3 did not have a tilt mechanism and the those other spare leads are for an electric rear view mirror ?

Though removing the motor and winding it sounds like a good idea too

thanks guys

Meg
The motor thats in the car is 95GG A53508BD, My main Ford suppliers when I lived in Devon (Vospers) say that that number is correct for the Ford scorpio Ultima 2L N reg, BB was the original and then BC & BD on the end, so it seems as though the motor is fine and correct.

So now I needs to understand just how scorpio Sunroofs open into tilt mode, whether electrically or by some mechanical mode, can members try theres and listen to see if its electrical or mechanical ??

Thanks all

I have a very similar problem with my sunroof, but at first mine would not tilt or slide. It now slides but will not tilt, I can if I operate the switch and push the sunroof make it tilt, but the problem with mine is the seals have leaked and now all the underside of my sunroof is rusting away and has seized up.

hi-high only electric bit is the motor.cables do the work as mentioned ,cable when going onto tilt pulls cam/aduster on the frame up and connects on to sunroof to tilt position. could be corroded and not moving.you should try a manual handle see what happens, sierra escort granada there all the same.handy to have incase your motor packs up to.
check    http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/sunroof.htm  one of  the pictureshows guider plate whch connects on to tilt mechanism on roof.if you take the three screws on the front (one is under the plastic block) that hold the frame inside the car for the sun blind, and move it all back you should see mechanism.failing that if you can take the six screws (3 each side)on the sunroof take it out and you can see if there is any thing wrong with mechanism .hth

Driving me nuts, my latest intell on this is that it could be the electronics within the motor, according to Ford Techincal center at £1 per min on the phone, they say though it opens and closes normally, the electrics might not be working in the secondary phase. I also found out that the people I bought it from also replaced the motor with a probable secondhand one as the current price for a new one is £250, as they fitted my car with a Ford escort battery as well, I would not put it passed them to have put a S/hand unit on. Having looked closely at it this morning the wiring has bits of foam stuck to the wiring as if ripped from somewhere, so I am guessing thats true.

I also got a lot of information & help from Vospers of Plymouth where I used to live, Essex Ford wants to see the colour of me money before they will comment, so if it needs Ford intervention in the future I will go 300 mile where I know it gets well cared for.

Not sure how to test the motor to see why its not engaging the tilt electrically, might have to buy another S/hand one that I know works.

any thoughts ??

appreciate all your input.

Thanks everyone for your valueable input which helped guide me to the right conclussion, it was the sunroof Motor, analysis of all the information lead me to believe I needed to try another motor, before I could move on to what could be next, so I bought another motor off ebay and fitted it today & sonn after I tuned the ignition & touched the button to tilt , the sunroof TILTED. So it now tilts, closes and then opens all as normal and its a great feeling to get these little things all working, thanks all as I move on the the next job.
