Embarassed Hope you can help, to cut a long story short, my 2.5 diesel overheated on the motorway, I have been told that the head gasket has gone, we know this because the top hose into the radiator 'blows up' ie swells after a short while of the engine running, is this the only reason  Huh

Thanks in anticipation, Mick

Could be a faulty pressure cap though a coincidence if it only went bad following overheating - how does it run with the cap off?

Thanks for the quick response, I havn't tried it with the cap off, and unfortunately I am 100 miles from the car at the mo, is it worth replacing the gaskets as ive been told that there are 4 and the heads will need skimming.

There are indeed 4 gaskets as there are 4 individual cylinder heads!  I was quoted about £23 ex. VAT each from FMD and that didn't include any of the other top-end gaskets needed such as manifolds, etc.  Not sure whether you'd need all four heads skimming or not - I suspect you will though!

FWIW the VM diesel does not like being overheated and h/gasket failure is common if they do; however that doesn't neccessarily mean the head(s) have warped...

Thanks Darren,  Wink
Looks like thats the way forward then a new head gasket, but first I will run the car without the pressure cap on, I suppose what I'm looking for is the hose to expand then I will know for sure. The thing is with this car, it's great when its going OK but it seems to have so many faults and has cost so much money that I think I might be throwing good money after bad.

Thanks again for your help, Mick

The hose won't balloon with the cap off as there's no pressure in the system!

Still, with the engine idling with cap off you might get some other symptoms such as bubbling in the tank, etc. which could indicate a gasket problem.  Mine seems to be getting oil in the water but as there's no other faults I'm ignoring it until it becomes essential...

I tried about a year ago to get a set of headgaskets for my project scorp, they ordered them but about a week later when i went in to pick them up Ford's said they don't make them anymore  Angry

It may just be that the FMD i went to was useless, but if you can't get the gaskets from ford try http://ccgi.vmspecialists.plus.com/release/prices.php?id=734088cd7d50744 9f93fcd851d , i havn't used them personally but they deal in all things VM.

Remember, don't just chuck the old gaskets, there may be notches cut out on them which indicate the thickness of the gasket, you'll need to know the thickness of each gasket when you order new ones.
