Bizarre ABS fault

Quite often when I turn on the ignition on my '95 diesel Scorp the ABS light will stay on. Sometimes it will go off once the car gets up to about 10-15mph and then stay off for the rest of the journey. Sometimes it will stay on even >15mph but switching the ignition off then on again whilst the car is moving cures it until next time.
I've tried switching the ignition off then on again with the car stopped and if the light was off previously it stays off, if it was on it stays on. I think it needs to be off for a certain amount of time before the light comes back on again at the next start.
Any ideas? I'm thinking wheel sensor being as car movement affects it, but they all meter out okay.

If your confident the wheel sensor's are all clean & o.k. Also the wheel bearings are good then the brain can cause the same symtoms. The black box attatched to the vavle block.
Just check your tyre pressures as well as some people say that it can affect it to but I am yet to see that one for myself

I have a very simular problem but the traction control light cones on aswell as the abs light. They seem to come on and go off after a bit of hard driving though.This all seemed to happen after towing a caravan but i cannot think of a link between the two!

Peppercossi yours sounds like the rear wheel bearings may be at fault as you say comes on when driving hard. I would check out A.S.A.P as could be a major problem if left.
Or just rear dirty sensors but do check.

Thanks Howie. I explained it the wrong way round. When i start the car the lights are on but then with a bit of hard breaking they both go off. Still the same conclusion?

Just as an update, I took the front wheels off today and sprayed the sensors and calipers with brake cleaner. Now the light stays on, even if ignition turned off/on whilst moving (actually it goes off for a second or two then comes back on again).
I also removed an ABS unit from a Scorp in the scrapyard and plugged it into my loom (though no pipework or otherwise connected) and the light didn't go off with that either so it looks like there is a definite sensor fault and I suspect it's the LH front wheel.
How do you get these sensors out of the caliper? I tried removing those on the car at the scrapyard and broke one of them and the other doesn't want to come out either, though I can rotate it in the caliper...

The sensors do come out , but with a great deal of difficulty. soak in WD or similar overnight and take a LOT of care when trying to remove it.

Will take a can of WD-40 to the scrapyard but I think I may have ruined the front sensors on that car anyway.

Darren they are one of the hardest most stubborn things to remove ever.
I reckon Ford super glued them in for a joke.
I have never been able to remove one with out breaking it.

Thanks... I think!  Oh well, car's on ebay now so hopefully I'll be getting something cheaper to tax, insure and run before long. If I got the ABS going and I could persuade it do a few more mpg then I might keep it, but having oil getting into the coolant doesn't fill me with confidence even though it seems to be running fine.

I recently had my ABS light staying on and had a sensor where the resistance measured OK on the meter. But the casing was split and when I removed the sensor and immersed the case in water the resistance dropped quite rapidly. Trouble is I also had a knocking cv joint on the driveshaft for that same wheel and as I replaced both items at the same time I'm not sure exactly which one fixed my ABS fault but one of them did the trick.

Looks like it's almost certainly a wheel sensor. This morning the ABS worked perfectly going to work. Tonight the light came back on again when car gets above about 15mph.
If anybody has some good sensors going spare I'd be really grateful - this is annoying the heck out of me!
