Battery tray

My battery tray has rusted, such that the battery is no longer secured down. I took it along to a garage today and he said you have to take the glove compartment out and possibly the dash to get access and to do welding work. Does this sound right?
And anyway how do you go about fixing the battery tray?

this rings a bell, I think someone has a problem with their battery tray having rusted quite badly but we are talking a year ago or more. I have an idea it was Daven or Dart here on the forum but that could be complete rubbish!
Also have an idea (having looked through the "Parts For Sale" section) that the battery tray can be replaced as a unit but others may have to confirm this.
Any chance of a photo?

EDIT: I don't remember the dash having to come out but that may be a safety issue where the welding is concerned.

If it needs welding, it would not surprise me if the dash had to come out.Its got all the ingredients for a fire. As it is not structual in that area, if it was me I would fabricate a base and rivet it in. In the past I have spot welded the base,s in and had a fire watcher with a washing up bottle filled with with water inside the car.But I do think the risk of fire is too high. Pop rivet in.

When you look at how many wires run close to that area I would not be surprised - worth while us all checking that area and protecting before the rot does set in!

Ok, well I'm booked in now for Thursday morning. The guys said they have done Escort battery trays before but not Scorpio. He has also ordered a new battery tray. But he didn't say he would have to dismember the whole dash and glove compartment. But this will depend on the extent of corrosion.
I'll let you know all know how it goes and how much I get ripped off by.

I would not weld another in, I would get one from a breaker (cut it out) clean it up & paint it.
Remove your old one with a drill to undo spot welds & then bolt the other in.
Makes a better job of it.
Very good chance when welding of a fire + you got all the important wiring just the other side of the fire wall.

Well I've got the job done now in Epping. Total charge came to £274.00. Mind you they did a sterling job. Removed bonnet, fuse box and glove compartment. Cut out all the corroded metalwork and fabricated the underlying panel. Protected and removed the wiring out the way and welded in the new panel. But the battery tray has been bolted in, in case it needs to come out again. The whole thing including bulkhead has been coated with Waxoyl including behind the bulkhead. You can smell it in the car. All the electrics work, well at the moment anyway. The blokes running it are also plesant to deal with.
Luckily I had a battery fixing kit which I got from Scorpioman off ebay. Fords didn't supply the clamp and bolts, so I used the spares.
The garage is called Eppingdene and is in Epping on Ivy Chimneys Road. If anyone want their details, please let me know. Aternatively I could add them to the recommeded list.
