Black plastic inlet manifold leaking water

Just bought my 4th scorpio, again a 2.3 auto. It is leaking water from just behind the thermostat housing on what I call the inlet manifold. Had this on a previous 2.3 and Ford charged me over £500 to replace.... Just wondered if anyone had ever tackled this job and how hard they found it ....... any tips? Thanks.

The inlet manifold is not a hard job to do as long as you get the two studs out underneath, without them out you aint got the room to remove it, Also beware as this is one of the first signs of a cracked head or blown head gasket.
BTW when I bought a new manifold around 18 months ago it was £230 and they are like rocking horse poo to find second hand.

Hi Richard, thanks for your reply, especially the "not a hard job", which i'm probably going to negate by asking 'what two studs underneath?' Fairly competant D.I.Y.er, but never done this before....... Take off alternater, fuel rail, funny looking big black air box, everything  ?

I can't quite remember if you have to remove the alternator or not, I don't think you do TBH, As far as the way it is fixed it is mostly bolts, four or five as far as I remember besides the two M8 studs, they are all M8, bolts have 10mm heads, the nuts on the studs are 13mm, These also go into the head as the bolts but if the nuts come off then you have not got enough room to take it off as the loom multi plugs etc are in the way, The throtle body and fuel rail will have to be removed.
I found this out when I replaced my engine without the manifolds on at the time it went in and then of course could not get the b****r back on 
I put two nuts against each other and tightened them against each other for removal but of course your manifold is in the way .
If you can't get it out and can't remove the studs then you could try taking the large nut from the engine mount on that side and get some strong helper to pull on the engine towards the nearside of the car 
I say strong as the engine is a heavy lump, I know as I can only just pick one up on a good day, I now have three, two spares in my garage awaiting rebuilds 
I hope you can do the easiest option and get those studs out, It's so easy then

Richard, I did 2 complete swops on Saturday and totally rebuilt both. I did remove the alternators just for ease of access. I also began to wonder half way through the 1st one whether I should have paid Ford the £586 ...but your comments that it wasn't a hard job saw me through[though my bruised and scratched right arm might not totally agree with you]. The studs came out very easily with a torx socket. Certainly extremely cost effective. Thankyou for your invaluable help, John B.
