Moaning sound on full steering lock

I've noticed that the car makes a kind of moaning sound when I turn the steering fully to the left or right (but only when I turn it as far as it can go. Ease it off slightly and the sound disappears. At the same time, the fluid level seems to drop somewhat, but increases again when the sound stops. Although the pipe underneath the servo pump (or what I guess is the servo pump, since the pipe underneath the reservoir connects to this) is slightly moist from what I guess is servo fluid, it doesn't seem to loose any fluid at all, and the level stays right at the max. Oh and it looks like there is some bubbling (almost like boiling, fluctuates by a couple of mm) in the reservoir when the engine is running. Is this just vibrations from the engine (can't say the reservoir vibrates much when I checked), fluid being pumped back, or is it something serious? I hope I don't need a new steering rack, as I was quoted £664 for a new one .

The fluuid in the reservoir should be moving when the engine is running is continually circulating. and the moaning noise is most likely the pump if it only occurs on full lock. With regards the "wet " pipe make sure the jubilee clip at the top where it joins the reservoir is fully nipped up. It it leaks only slightly it dripos onto the alternator and can cause problems later.

Every car I've owned with Power Steering has always made a moaning or 'sighing' noise when turned to full lock. As soon as you come off full lock, even by a fraction of a turn of the steering wheel, it goes away. Some systems have a high pressure release valve which may be what you're hearing and which is quite normal. Check the clips, as suggested, and don't overfill the reservoir. Also check the general state of the hose that's wet, and if in any doubt replace it. Easier when you've got time, than on a wet night when you need the car! If the pump has a drive-belt then check this too for proper tautness. It's remotely possible that you might have air in the system, in which case bleed it, but I reckon this would be most unlikely, especially as the level of fluid is constant. All the best

Wouldn't worry too much about the strange noise on full lock. Every PAS car I've had has done it

Mine also moans sometimes on full lock, but i don't mind it, it doesn't lose oil, it's ok for me. By the way does somebody know which oil goes into ? i'd like to change mine because it's "black and beautyfull" . I was thinking maybe with the passing of time, the oil losese it's properties and the pump makes funny noises. It wold worth to try. But is there anything else beside Motorcraft ESDM.......

Thanks Scorpio Man, i was about to put manual gearbox oil into the steering system. . As for the price it says 3 pound for 500ml......Probably here in romania it will cost 3-4 times.....ehhh no problem.....theres always fun to rob a bank when mister scorpio need something. PS: for not hijacking the topic, i will retun with the final solution, it the steering pump would moan after an oil change Cheers to all

If it goes away, maybe I'll give it a change as well. The fluid looks okay, but I doubt it has ever been changed.
