Vacuum pipe/diaphragm

Hello again, My N reg Executive (base) spec Scorpio - no air con - has a bellows/diaphragm unit to the side of the pollen filter box under the scuttle. It has a lever that goes back to the PFB and a vac (?) pipe to the front. I had noticed that this pipe had come adrift yesterday, and replaced it. My question is - What is this mechanism and what does it do? Sorry if I sound like a complete numbnut, but I do work in the motor industry and have been self servicing my cars for the last 35 odd years, I just haven't come across a car as complicated as my Scorpio before. Thanks, Clive.

Hi Martin, thanks for that. What effect would I get if (as was the case) the vac pipe was disconnected? - I can't seem to recollect that the heater has been playing up at all Clive.

Ah, just thought about it a bit more. The "fan" dial on my car can be turned clockwise or anti clockwise from 12 o'clock. One way (the diagram on dash says) I will "pull" air from outside, the other from inside (the recirc that you referred to?). I guess that, in that case, there would be little difference felt, and the heater/blower unit would appear to work normally. What is the point of being able to appoint which source your air comes from anyway? Clive.

To stop unwanted "smells " entering the car or even to cool it down quicker using the A/C. or even heat it up in the winter. see this page in the handbook PAGE
