exhaust pinging

hi i have a n reg 2.9 v6 cologne,it is running ok at the moment but its mot is due. i can sort out most of the things needed to get it up to standards tyres, discs, pads, wipers ,lights, etc,. but before i go to all this expense i would like to know if it is normal for my exhaust to ping, last year i thought it would be a good idea to boil my engine dry after my radiator gave up the ghost i had a new radiator fitted and the car ran great on checking the fluids about a week later i discovered that the garage hadnt tied back the fan cables and one of them had been rubbing against the ac pulley and cut in half i repaired this and both fans worked, however in this recent hot weather my engine seems to be burning it gets really hot to the extent where it is uncomfortable to put your hand on the surrounding bodywork and the bonnet is quite warm to the touch there is a smell of burning oil though this could be due to a leak at the rocker cover gasket which i am going to replace this week. my main concern is the pinging of the exhaust after a run im thinking cat and the expense. the noise comes from the tailpipe and im just wondering if this is the exhaust just cooling down (all stainless steel). ive done an instrument reset and my temp sets off at 255 and goes down as far as 95 all fans click in as they should. any advice would be welcome as i dont want to part with the beast for the expense of a cat MARK

I only paid £170 for a cat from National tyres, as opposed to £400 plus from a dealer.

As the exhaust downpipe cools and contracts it make all sort of metallic noises. Nowt to worry about.

My 24v makes a sort of "clack" sound as it cools down, and sometimes when it warms up. If it is sunny and the engine hot then the wings/bonnet can be very hot. Keep an eye on the temp gauge and you should be ok

| Same thing with my 16v I guess it's just metal expanding/contracting. The pinging can be something dripping on the exhaust, as scorpio_man said.

Ive had a few cars that have done it and they passed mot's no bother. Also when I had my honda cbr1000 I put a stainless exhaust on that and when it was cooling it sounded like santas sleigh bells.
