Whats cheaper - remote or lock fix?
« on: Jul 10th, 2006, 9:39am »

After weeks of perfect working my remote just packed up.

Have done all the recommended things re cleaning, replaced batteries etc but not a thing.

My concern is that the car will only key unlock from the passenger side, and if that goes i don't fancy having to crawl in through the back! (it's an estate).

Is it cheaper to get the drivers door lock sorted or to (try to) get a working remote

Love the car - hate the remote!

The method of door lock removal/re-build is here.  http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockrep.htm  It sounds as though the drivers door lock is simply worn out. Any Ford key will locka Ford but only a correct combination will un-lock. If the lock or the key are worn it won't unlock. If your key works in the ignition, passenger door and boot the lock itself seems the most likely cause.

Some years ago I bought a complete lock set for a 1995 Escort from FMD.  Cost around £50 including keys (not the chipped ones though) so was well happy.

when i got my car the remote did not work & would not program ie 4x to pos. 1 bleep,    unlock button   beep,   key off....... should beep , but remote was nfg so i some times had no beep after the unlock button, & never a beep after key off.  I stripped the remote & all looked ok, so i did the tin foil trick on the rubber pads & its been working fine for some time now !   Did you get all the beeps? if not try the foil, silicon gasket sealer will stick the little bits of foil, i found evo stick no good.

when did the drivers door lock pack up? is it just the key in the lock not working or may this be part of the problem? as it does sound like remote has programed ok. do you still have double/globel locking if fitted as there is a fuse for that, it may be f16 in drivers side fuse box but it was some time back i checked mine so i may be wrong!

Fuse 16 and 17 are listed as controlling  'electronics' if that helps.

Mine had the opposite problem, it would only lock from the passenger side. I swapped over the drivers side / passenger side locks, so now it locks from both sides but only unlocks from the drivers side. (when swapping the locks over it reverses the problem as the keys have to turn the other way to lock/unlock)

It sounds as if the barrel lock reset switch has gone up the swanny this is the switch which sits around the barrel. Not expensive but time consuming to do.
