Why am I wobbling??

Keep meaning to ask if anyone knows why my P reg Ultima estate wobbles when I brake. This only happens above 45 MPH and is worse with a slight braking action than it is jumping on the brakes (not that I do that much) It is not discs, as I have had new ones fitted thinking it would cure the problem, it didn't. I did have a near side bush replaced, at the same time as new discs, but not the offside, this is my next mission (after the new calliper) I was looking at an Ultima on ebay and the owner wrote in the description exactly the same problem, so didn't know if this is a common prob or not. It is quite severe and my arms shake if I am braking around 60 to 70 Mph. there is no tremor in the peddles, it all comes from the steering column and the gear Knob has a slight wiggle at the same time. Any info appreciated. Regards Clare .x.

If it's so severe that it's making your arms shake, then I would NOT drive it until you find out what's wrong. It will be much easier to sort out at home than by the side of a road in this heat!!! You need to get under the front, and visually check your steering, suspension, calipers, discs, and wheels for any obvious faults (loose nuts, leakages, broken or worn components etc). Could be as simple as wheel alignment or wheel balance, but also check that the wheels are actually round, and haven't been damaged. Alloy wheels can be easily damaged, and if one of them is even slightly oval, it will cause you steering and braking problems. Also check that both wheels are securely bolted up, as if one is even slightly loose the disc will be loose too! Also check that both front tyres are exactly the same size. Two different sizes (not makes) can make steering very strange and affect braking and handling. Good luck in finding it.

I had a granada scorpio that did that - it turned out to be some bushes on the front suspension worn out, sounds as if it's quite violent so would suggest getting the front end checked out

Yep, could well be mushy front wishbone ( rear ) bushes. Jack up the front and wiggle the front wheels checking for movement in the wishbones .
