inlet manifold silver tube thingy

Hi people, just a quicky hopefully. On top of the fat black plastic of the inlet manifold sits a smallish aluminium tube with a 2 wire connector on one end and a tube on t'other. This item appears to humming quite loudly in the current heat.......doing no apparent harm other than to my already at limit nerves. Is this by any way connected to the air con, and can I simply swop this from another scorpio or will gremlins spill out and ruin my day. Any help much appreciated. John.

You don't mention which engine it is but it sounds like the the Idle Air Control Valve which allows a variable amount of air to bypass the (closed) throttle valve in order to maintain a stable idle.

Don't know why it would humm, but if it's the IACV, then just unplug the connector and unscrew the two bolts and it should be loose. 40 second job  Grin

The detail is here. As it has a solenoid that is probably the source of the noise. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm. If the idle is ok it would appear to be working correctly and if you remove it you will need a new gasket, unless you're lucky, to obtain an airtight seal again. If you remove it you can clean it with carb cleaner and then apply 3inOne to lubricate the shaft.
